Petro Rabigh, Saudi Aramco and Sumitomo Chemical developed the joint venture Rabigh Refining & Petrochemical – Company (Petro Rabigh) in 2005. Originally producing 18.4 million tonnes per year (MTPA) of petroleum-based products and 2.4 MTPA of derivatives based on ethylene and propylene. The facility is now valued at around SAR 16.71 billion (with 25% of the public financing and the remaining 50% funded equally by Saudi Aramco and Sumitomo Chemical).

Goods from Petro Rabigh are used in a variety of end goods, such plastics, paint, detergents, lubricants, resins, coolants, anti-freeze, carpets, rope, clothing, shampoo, auto interiors, epoxy glue, insulation, film, fibres, and appliances for homes, packaging, candles, pipes, and many other things.

OUR FOUNDERS

Sumitomo Chemical from Japan and Saudi Aramco unite their innovative technological capabilities to create Petro Rabigh. The firm was set up by Saudi Aramco and Sumitomo Chemical in September 2005 as an equally owned joint venture. And work on the petrochemical complex began in March 2006. It was the largest single foreign direct investment in Saudi Arabian history. With a planned investment of US$9.8 billion, of which US$5.8 billion was acquired through project finance.

PETROCHEMICALS
