Animal Science plays a crucial role and multidisciplinary field that integrates biology, genetics, nutrition, protection against disease, behavior to enhance the well-being of animals, improve agricultural practices, and contribute to sustainable and ethical interactions with the animal kingdom to developed for profit. Animals are bred commercially in order to meet the high demand for food. The care, breeding, management, etc. of animals are particularly monitored under the department of animal science.

Housing and Facilities: Providing appropriate housing and facilities for dairy cattle, including comfortable resting areas, proper ventilation, and facilities for feeding and milking.

Nutrition Management: Formulating and providing balanced diets to meet the nutritional needs of dairy cattle. This includes a mix of forages, grains, and supplements to optimize milk production and overall health.

Milking Management: Implementing efficient milking practices, which may include manual or automated milking systems. Ensuring proper hygiene during the milking process is crucial for milk quality.

Reproduction Programs: Managing breeding programs to optimize reproductive efficiency and genetic traits in the herd. This may involve artificial insemination and genetic selection. Healthcare: Implementing health protocols, vaccination programs, and routine veterinary care to prevent and address diseases. Monitoring the overall health and well-being of the dairy herd is essential.

Calf Management: Caring for newborn calves, including proper nutrition, housing, and healthcare. Calves are often raised separately until they are ready to join the milking herd.

Waste Management: Addressing environmental concerns related to manure management. Sustainable waste disposal practices and, in some cases, recycling manure for use as fertilizer are common.

Record-Keeping: Maintaining detailed records of individual cows, including health history, reproductive status, and milk production data. This information helps in making informed management decisions.

Technology Integration: Embracing modern technologies such as automated milking systems, precision farming, and data analytics to improve efficiency, monitor herd health, and optimize production.

Economic Management: Managing the financial aspects of the dairy farm, including budgeting, cost analysis, and marketing of dairy products.

Dairy farming encompasses the breeding, raising, and utilization of dairy animals, primarily cows, for the production of milk and the various dairy products processed from it. The breeds of dairy cattle have been established by years of careful selection and mating of animals to attain desired types and to improve production of increasing milk production. Production per cow varies with many environmental factors, but the genetic background of the cow is extremely important.

The dairy animals are an efficient producer of human food from roughage. Pasture is the natural feed for dairy cattle, and an abundance of good pasture provides most of the requirements of a good dairy ration. During seasons when pastures are inadequate, cows need hay, silage, and grain in sufficient amounts and balance to supply nutrient needs, and to guarantee a nutritional reserve to keep milk volume and composition from declining.

Our food production relies on healthy soils to produce high and healthy crop yields. Livestock has a very important role in maintaining the soil health as it is very important source of soil organic carbon through its manure, if managed properly. Grazing livestock such as cattle and sheep and other ruminants as they are called is a powerful method of protecting our soil. Grasslands have a strong capacity for storing carbon which is not only the main driver in helping to prevent climate change but also the key ingredient in improving soil health and making soil more resistant to extreme weather. With its importance, Forage crops provides nutrients and high-quality feed for livestock, supporting the health and productivity of animals. Increased productivity of milk and meat contributes to agricultural production.
