Job Description
Visy is powering the circular economy, closing the loop between packaging, remanufacturing and recycling. As Australia’s leading recycled and kraft paper manufacturer, Visy Pulp and Paper is a big part of our business. Our integrated recycling and manufacturing operations means we collect paper and cardboard from households and businesses and turn it into up to 100% recycled paper. We are also home to the world’s most environmentally friendly kraft paper mill in Tumut, providing high-quality kraft paper for domestic and international markets. The paper we produce supplies our board facilities across Australia and New Zealand, where it is remanufactured into cardboard packaging for the food and beverage industry.
Role Details
Reporting to the General Manager, located in Coolaroo (VIC), the Laboratory Operations Manager leads and manages the day-to-day operations of the paper and board laboratory and product development laboratory. He/She is a key contact for internal paper and board customers in terms of testing capability and test method development. This positions responsibility is to ensure smooth continuous operation of the lab, meeting its agreed testing turn round times, with a high level of accuracy, in order to provide data driven information and analysis to the business to enable effective decision making.
What you’ll do
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Paper & Board Laboratory, ensuring all testing and analysis are performed to the highest standards.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of skilled laboratory technicians.
- Oversee quality control and assurance processes, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with R&D, production, and client-facing teams to support product development and troubleshooting.
- Ensure the laboratory operates within budget and maintains its accreditation.
- Maintain and improve laboratory equipment, processes, and safety protocols.
- Prepare and present detailed reports and insights to internal and external stakeholders.
What You Will Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Paper Engineering, or a related field (master’s preferred).
- Proven experience in materials testing and quality assurance, with a strong technical background (Paper and board preferred).
- Demonstrated leadership experience in a laboratory or similar environment.
- Knowledge of relevant testing standards (e.g., ISO, TAPPI, ASTM).
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Familiarity with laboratory management software and data analysis tools is an advantage.
