Job Description

The Utility Technician includes five levels that are differentiated based on the Water Treatment Certification level held by the UTT from Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA); these include: Trainee (no certification), Level I, Level II, Level III, and Level IV.

Job responsibilities

Accumulate from the trainee designation level to the maximum certification level acquired by the UTT. Utility Treatment Technicians are required to complete the responsibilities listed for certification levels below their specific level, as necessary to carry out the duties of the position. Due to the collaborative nature of the work, UTTs may also perform responsibilities listed for levels above their own certification level, provided it falls within the scope of their current AEP certification, competency as confirmed through training, or under the technical direction of a UTT of a higher level.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In addition to the responsibilities listed under the UTT Water Treatment Trainee, a UTT Water Treatment Level I also have the below responsibilities:

  • Assist in the operation water treatment facilities within certification level scope, AEPA approvals and municipal, provincial, and federal regulations.
  • Monitor plant and reservoir operations to ensure optimal performance of the infrastructure.
  • Assist with investigations pertaining to plant operational issues and water quality complaints.
  • Complete daily records and submit data for reports.
  • Operate various types of mobile equipment used in the maintenance and repair of facilities.
  • Assist with inspecting and monitoring infrastructure to ensure efficient operation according to manufacturers’ specifications, internal preventive maintenance program standards, and municipal engineering standards.
  • Monitor and operate standby power sources to ensure the continuous operation of treatment facilities and reservoirs.
  • Use and maintain laboratory equipment, chemical pumps, and online analyzers.
  • Perform various types of water sampling and testing to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain a basic knowledge of the regulations and acts that apply to each facility.
  • Identify to more senior technicians, conditions that need to be dealt with in a timely manner.
  • Ensure work area is clean, safe, and well maintained.
  • Adhere to procedures and policies pertaining to safety, treatment operations, plant inspections, etc.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Skilled in the operation of machines, tools and mobile equipment used in municipal water treatment facilities under varying conditions.
  • Proficiency in the use of various sampling and testing equipment and instruments.
  • Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions, read and interpret blueprints, drawings, plans and specifications.
  • Communicate respectfully with co-workers and ability to maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.
  • Demonstrate dependability and reliability by having the ability to work with varying levels of supervision, including some tasks with no direct supervision.
  • Must be familiar with methods and procedures, quality and safety standards relative to each job being performed as per Municipal and industry standards.
  • Proficiency with various Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to utilize office equipment.
  • Math and numeracy skills for calculations relating to volume, flow, velocity, chemical dosage, consumption, etc.

EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency is required.
  • Level I Water Treatment Certification or higher is required.
  • One (1) year experience as per AEPA experience requirements.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check is required.
  • A valid Class five (5) Operator’s License is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions.
  • Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.
